KANTHASWAMY MOVIE REVIEW

KANTHASWAMY – Chiyaan Vikram had got his trophy this time too. The film is pure commercial masala entertainer that strikes fine balance between style and substance and also has neat message. The film has all the trademark super-hero movie elements like flashy action scenes and eye-popping special effects. But, actually it is not a super-hero film that is the twist in the film.

The film opens as normal film showing ordinary people flocking to a Murugan temple which has become famous as all their wishes can be fulfilled at the temple. The people wrote their wishes in a piece of paper and tie it to a tree in the temple.

KANTHASWAMY (Vikram) dressed as a rooster picked up the letters of the ordinary people from the tree and in a Robin Hood way provides cash and succor. This made the local DIG (Prabhu) feeling some what unnatural and he starts investigating about it.

At the same time there is a brave and daring CBI officer KANTHASWAMY (Vikram), and he has the IQ of a genius, the strength of a bull and speed of cheetah. He is on the mission to uncover black money and illegal wealth of rich and corrupt Indians saved in foreign banks and he believed these are responsible for all the crime in our society.

He conducts a raid in the palatial bungalow of Pallur Paramajyothi Ponnusamy or PPP (Ashish Vidhyarthi) and finds unaccounted cash and documents of various foreign deals over Rs 1000 crore. Shriya plays the role of villain’s daughter and she swears revenge on KANTHASWAMY and pretends to fall in love with the hero.

The introduction scene of rooster KANTHASWAMY where he comes crashing through the dome of a police station and plays around with the bad comic cop is terrific. The highlight of the film is KANTHASWAMY dressed as a woman and teaching Charlie and Mayilsamy a fitting lesson is hilarious. The blindfolded action scenes in Mexico are stunning.

What is the connection between masked crusader Kandasamy and the CBI officer Kandasamy? Why is the CBI Joint Director Krishna Rao (Telugu actor Krishna) protecting Mr. Kandasamy? Can the villains- PPP, Rajmohan of RMG group, and Mexican Pitchumani (Alex) expose and bring Kandasamy to trial? Will the DIG succeed in proving that Kandasamy is no God? The underlining message in the film is, “Money (read black) is the root cause of all evil”.

The answers to all these questions are known only when we watch the movie. Technically the innovative camera angles and the lighting of the cinematographer made the film visually stunning. The sets of Thotta Dharani are awesome especially the bedroom of the heroine and the interior of the plus us used as villain’s hide out is fantastic.

The music for the film is by Devi Sri Prasad also given the special support. Two songs ‘Excuse me..’ and ‘Enperu meenakumari..’ have been well picturised and lavishly shot. Susi Ganesan also done a cameo in this film and by this flick he joined in the big league of directors in Tamil.

There is grandeur and richness in every shot in the film and no wonder it took two years to complete. The film with no doubt belongs to Vikram and he rocks. Shriya sizzles throughout and carries the glamourous role. Prabhu fitted the role of investigative cop. There is also a separate comedy track for Vadivel as Thengakadai Thenappan.

KANTHASWAMY is perfectly an action commercial entertainer and can be seen with the entire family and it is an enjoyable one.

Arundhathee

Set from the 1920s till the 21st century, Arundhathee stars pretty and curvaceous Anushka. The movie is directed by Kodi Ramakrishna. The dubbed version is brought to the Tamil audiences by N. Radha under the banner of Sri Thenandal Films. 

For all who thought that the era of the sari-clad seductress was forgotten history, there's new hope in Anushka, who is redefining sensuality with her costumes of heavy silk saris, long plaits decorated with flowers, bangles upto her elbows and the whole look, rounded off with a big red bindi on her forehead. 

Now, the story:

Arundhati (Anushka) arrives at her ancestral home in Gandharavakottai to meet her grandfather (Kaikala Satyanarayana) after her engagement with Rahul (Deepak). As she is the spitting image of her great grandmother, Jakkamma (Anushka), her grandfather, and his loyal maid Chandramma (Manorama) look upon her as the heiress to the lineage. 

A flashback reveals Jakkamma fighting and vanquishing Pasupathi (Sonu Sood). His vengeful soul is imprisoned in his samadhi awaiting the day when he can be released so that he can take revenge. Jakkamma is blissfully unaware of all this and reigns her province peacefully.

Coming to the present, a couple on the way to visit Arundhati meet with an accident near the palace. The woman vanishes mysteriously and the man breaks open Pasupathi's samadhi as evil spirits possess him. Now Pasupathi is free to wreak his vengeance and comes after Arundhati, as she is the reincarnation of Jakkamma. Fakeer Anwar (Sayaji Shinde) an expert in the supernatural and paranormal world warns Arundhati to leave Gandharvakottai as soonas possible as he can sense an evil presence. Arundhati refuses to believe all this, but when circumstances bring her face to face with the evil spirit of Pasupathi, she is forced to fight him again.

Can Arundhati outwit the evil spirit now? Watch how graphics has lifted a revenge drama from the ordinary to the simply awe-inspiring in theatres.

Anushka is the surprise factor as Jakkamma. Rising to fame in glamorous roles, she is beautiful as a medieval princess in traditional attire. Her performance is so good as Jakkamma that it overpowers her portrayal as Arundhati She has proved that she's more than just a pretty face and can act very well. Sonu Sood is chillingly evil as Pasupathi and has given a stellar performance. Kaikala Satyanarayana returns to the screen after a long time and proves that his acting skills are as good as ever. Manorama is in her usual element,

The dialogues of the movie are well written and the lyrics also work well. The dubbing has been done so well that after a while you cease to forget that it is a Telugu film dubbed in Tamil. The Tamil version will surely do as well if not better than the Telugu version.

Kanchivaram

After making hard-hitting realistic Malayalam/ multilingual movies like Kaala Pani, Priyadarshan jumped on the hilarious remake bandwagon, making a number of popular commercial masala comedies. Now the same Priyadarshan has made a film straight from his heart - Kanchivaram, the story of a poor weaver who strives to fulfil a promise made to his daughter. The age-old saying that one who weaves a piece of cloth never enjoys ownership and authority over the same is demonstrated by the plight of Vengadam the protagonist in the film. The film is also set in the British era of the 1940s in the famous silk-weaving village of Kanchipuram in Madras Province. 

In Hindu rituals, silk is surprisingly a symbol of sanctity and must be used during marriage and death ceremonies. (Surprisingly, because silk is made be boiling live silk pupae to extract the silk yarn.) Priyadarshan has spun a gripping human story with utmost perfection, precision and poignancy - using the lives of the silk-weavers as his weft and warp. 

Vengadam (Prakashraj) is a traditional master weaver, who, for a pittance, weaves the most intricate and delicate silk saris for the merchants who hire him. Ever as a child, he dreamt of draping his bride in silk sari but could not make his dream come true. When Vengadam's wife Annam (Shreya Reddy) gives birth to a daughter, he pledges before the village that his daughter will wear a silk sari on her wedding day. But how will the poor weaver, mired in poverty and near-starvation, fulfill this pledge? He starts stealing single strands of silk yarn every day from his workplace, brings them home and starts weaving his dream sari in his own backyard. His wife dies, his daughter Thamarai (Shammu) grows up into a beautiful girl, and the sari becomes longer and longer. Vengadam also takes part in hunger strikes, makes friends with a communist writer, gets influenced by his talks, and participates in demonstrations against the merchants who hold the weavers in thrall. 

An emotional story is told with the historical and political changes as its backdrop and its authentic mood is maintained throughout the film. It is indeed a proud badge of distinction and honour for director Priyadarshan. With Akashvani's mourning for Gandhiji's death broadcast in the background, the film begins as a flashback. The whole village surrounds and looks in awe at the first motor car that enters the destination. From there begins Vengadam's story. Then the film shuttles back and forth in time, much like the shuttle in a hand loom.

1977 Movie Preview

This week it is Namitha again at the box office and that makes it the third time within a span of one month. This time around, the lady is paired with Sarath Kumar. The movie is Sarath Kumar’s magnum opus 1977. Double roles are not new to this actor. He has perhaps donned the most number of double roles in the film industry and his specialty is father-son duos. This formula has given him many a hit over his long career and Sarath is back at it



again when his hold at the box office seems to be waning a bit.

1977 will not be any routine double act by Sarath Kumar; we will be seeing him in 6 different get ups, with three different heroines with the story taking us from India to Malaysia over two eras. In fact, 1977 might be one of the most expensive films in Sarath Kumar’s career. Though much has not been revealed about its storyline, we know for sure that the movie will be a thriller with plenty of high adrenalin pumping actions and liberal doses of glamour provided by the lead ladies.

The highlight of the film includes the introduction song shot with more than 500 junior artistes and dancers, the power-packed gun fight between Sarath Kumar and 40 baddies, a chase sequence that features some of Malaysia’s best known stunt artistes, a climax that has over 100 Malaysian police vehicles and personnel that was shot for 11 consecutive day and nights close to the Petronas twin towers. 1977 also includes a song that was shot lavishly on a set that was erected at a cost of Rs. 40 lakhs.

Literally, the producer has not spared any expense to make the film a rich and engaging fare. Mumbai-based model Sandhya Shetty makes her debut and is set to add to the oomph factor. Farzana too will make her presence felt, not to forget Namitha who has an introduction scene devoted to her. Sarath Kumar has made it clear that the film is purely for entertainment purpose and hence it has no political overtones. The movie is a bilingual with a simultaneous Telugu release.

Scripted and directed by Dinesh Kumar with music by Vidyasagar, 1977 looks good to end Sarath Kumar’s hit drought at the box office. We will know this Friday.

The crew will also fly to the U.S. soon and shoot at the Berkley University, San Francisco. Goutham is planning to shoot important sequences at the famous Brooklyn University. Two songs composed by music director Haris Jayaraj are ready.

Art director Rajeevan will erect a mammoth set abroad to shoot one of these songs. The camera by Rathnavelu and Thamarai has penned the lyrics.

A trim Suriya sports a teenager look in the film. Sameera Reddy and Divya are the heroines.

Kuuselan Movie Review, Kuuselan Review

The much awaited Rajinikanth starer KUSELAN has released recently. It is the remake of Malayalam hit KATHA PARYUMBOL. After a long time our super star has given more importance to the script rather than to his heroic charisma. One can notice the actor Rajini of AARILIRUNTHU ARABATHU VARAI type in KUSELAN. It is a marvellous performance by our super star. At the same time Director P Vasu has been cautious in order to satisfy Rajini fans by including few punch dialogues and fight sequences. Rajini gives a new grammar to friendship by twisting the saying and boasting it like "Matha Pitha Guru Nanban Dheivam". There was a great applause from the audience when he says this dialogue.

Our super star comes in the 3rd reel only but till that there is an excitement among the audience as to know when he will appear. The story line is simple but it is very strong enough to grab the attentions of many. Barber Balan (Pasupathy) lives with his wife Sreedevi(Meena) and their 3 children in a village. He is in huge debt starving to make ends meet. All his crisis suddenly takes a turn over when a film crew arrives to shoot for some song sequences in the village. The hero for the film is Ashok Raj(Rajinikanth) who happened to be the childhood friend of balan. By knowing this all the village ppl kept on troubling balan to give intro to their favorite hero. The chemistry between Rajinikanth and Pasupathi is excellent. I think the character of Ashok Raj resembles our real rajini itself because so natural our super star is fitting into that role. The film is really a majestic tale of true friendship.

GV Prakash has scored an excellent music. Along with picturization if you watch it, i am sure you will have that feel. Especially Rajini's intro song 'cinema cinema' is too good. Meena well fits into the character role of Sreedevi and did all justice that she could do with. Nayanthara pairs up with our super star again after CHANDRAMUKHI. Man!!! She is too hot in the ' Chaaral oh Chaaral' song. She plays as a heroine in that film crew. Vadivelu's comedy is slightly below par but the presence of santhanam, Livingston and others add more fun to the story. Aravind krishna's camera work is too clever one can notice the young Rajini of ten years back. Last but not least Pasupathy is the real back bone of the story. If there is one big confusing question, it would be what’s the cause for a murder? And the reasons are so simple. Betrayal, Adultery and Frustration are the best probabilities that lead to a murder. You have Mr. Sathyam drawing his film on these lines with suspenseful-thriller means of narration.
In fact, he disapproves of the general theory; success of film depends on the star values that film carries. The film has no such leading actors and it’s the script and screenplay that carry us all throughout sans any distraction.
Churning out flops continuously one after the other doesn’t stop an ambitious filmmaker (Thalaivasal Vijay) from his serious attempts of delivering a hit film. Well, his desires are so commendable, but that’s a big blunder when it comes to his family life. With his entire focus centered on profession, he fails to take care of his beautiful wife (Sona). Son of Thalaivasal Vijay’s friends enters into his house for the stay and there beings the turmoil. Sona and the young lad became so closer and eventually that turns out to be the start off with illegal affair. Situations are complicated when her husband gets to know about it and an idea is shot at Sona’s mind that is to bump off her husband.
At this point you have the filmmaker found dead in a suitcase floating on the Coovam river and a tough cop (Venkat Bose) is assigned to unravel the mystery behind the death. On this process of investigation, he comes across 6 individuals who are somehow expected to be linked with the murder: advocate Padma, pickpocket, funeral dancer, a tall man who comes in the bike, Sona and her illegitimate friend.
The scenes are very well executed with spine chilling sequences and the knot is tied in a gripping manner. Sona does an excellent job with perfection and her sensuous aspects will be attention grabbing for young lads. Her alluring looks has added the best of qualities for the film’s strength and on the equal pars is the good performance by Bose Venkat.
L.V.Ganesan has composed good tunes and his background score offers enhancement of visual feeling. Sathyam does a good work and if he had focused on some of the blatant errors, the film would have been exceeding the expectations.
On the whole, this film implies of good efforts from the director and has a good message for the society that at present is comprised of annoying morals…
Bottom - Line: impressive but not perfect

Muniyandi Vilangiyal Moondramaandu Movie Review

Two cheers for Bharath and director Thirumurugan for playing a winning game for the second time. The Em Mahan duo, who dwelled on family relationships in their first venture, have made a similar attempt in their latest offing too, however with some major changes.


Set in the backdrop of a rural college, the script revolves around a student, who feels that he is trapped in the ego war of two men. When the battle wants to take toll of his love affair, the decision he is forced to take is Muniyandi Vilangiyal Moondram Aandu.


Be it portraying a typical rural institution or its students or their accents, Thirumurugan proves that he is second to none. The only thing that prevents him from emerging out and out triumphant is that mega serial feel which one can feel here and there in this film.


As we already said, Bharath is a college student, whose father is always at loggerheads with another senior man in the village. When Bharath falls in love with Poorna, the rivalry threatens to snuff out the hopes of love.


Very much aware that he is part of a dangerous game that has cost lives before, Bharath vows to join hands with his ladylove. On whose side is victory is the screenplay with choc-a-bloc twists and turns.


Bharath’s character goes through an emotional roller coaster. And his perfomance gels well with the story. Fresher Poorna is fresh and has done a neat job. Ponvannan as a father proves his mettle. Though Vadivelu tries to tickle the funny bone, it ends up in quagmire.


Technically, there is nothing much to mention except Vidyasagar’s music. Quite like Thirumurugan’s Metti Oil, Muniyandi too will sounds nice among women folk, not talking about men and youth in the so called B and C centres.

Subiramaniyapuram Movie Review

What else than a flick close to real life could Sasikumar, a student of Bala and Ameer schools could deliver? Yes, Subramaniapuram is an interesting drama with no artificial characters and scenes, set in the backdrop of Madurai.

Azhagar (Jai), Paramar (director Sasikumar), Kasi (Ganja Karuppu) and a physically challenged boy living in Subramaniapuram area, a suburb of Madurai are good friends. With the support of former councillor Somu’s brother (Samudrakani), they do the odd jobs.

Circumstances make Azhagar fall in love with Somu’s daughter Thulasi (Swathy). This creates a fissure in the gang. Meanwhile the councillor’s brother uses them to murder a party rival, and fails to bail them out when they are caught by the police. This makes Azhagar & Co to take revenge. Are they succeeded is the climax.

At a time when everyone was in an idea that Subramaniapuram would be a romantic film, director Sasikumar springs surprise by taking a deviation. Slick execution, innovative camera movements and music by James Vasanthan work hard to give that feel of the 80’s.

The actors mostly freshers pass the muster. Swathy, an import from Tollywood is refreshing.

However the film moves at a snail's pace. Another draw back is that it is too bloody and gory. Apart from these two factors, Sasikumar should be appreciated for coming out with a bold and daring attempt.

Uliyin Osai Movie Review

It is no easy task to make a period film. And it is doubly so if an octogenarian, that too a head of a State had to write the script (dialogues to be precise) despite his busy schedule. Above all this, Uliyin Osai has emerged triumphant, thanks to the gripping script of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and execution of director Ilavenil.

Based on the story Sarapallam Samundi written by Karunanidhi in Murasoli four decades ago, Uliyin Osai is a movie on the life of a sculptor set in 1005 AD. It aptly shows his emotions, the passion for his work and ends with a shocking decision he makes when things go wrong.

Raja Raja Chozhan (Sarath Babu) and his son Rajendra Chozhan want to build a grand temple and choose Iniyan (Vineeth), a sculptor for the purpose. Iniyan wants a dancer who can pose for sculpting but finds it difficult to zero in on an apt woman.

At that time, he comes across a poor girl Samundi (Keerthi Chawla). Her stunning looks stuns him and he selects her as the model. He falls in in love with her in due course. When he expresses his love, Iniyan is shocked to know that she is none other than the wife of Rajendra Chozhan. What happens is a shocking climax.

Despite the fact that Ulyin Osai is a period film, it has no lengthy dialogues in chaste Tamil. They are precise and interesting as well. Vineeth, as a sculptor emotes well. Keethi Chawla shows right reactions when Vineeth expresses his love for her. Sarath Babu, Manorama, Akshaya and Thalaivasal Vijay are apt selections. Ganja Karuppu’s comedy fails to evoke laughter.
Ilayaraja’s music is one of the assets for Uliyin Osai. B Kannan’s camera adds value. However, on the flip-side, the sets lack grandeur. Otherwise, Ulyin Osai is a well-chisled sculpture which is a feast for eyes.

Vallamai Thaaraayo Movie Review


Seemingly inspired by Maniratnam’s Mouna Ragam, Madhumitha, who is making her foray into Kollywood as a director has dished out a melodrama, which portrays the emotional battle of a woman between her husband and lover.

While powerful dialogues and quick turn of events help the audience to stick on to the screen, a sense of dejavu too prevails, thus making them to feel like watching a megaserial on big screen.

However, the debutant director deserves pat for not coming out with a run-of-the-mill kind of movie with commercial compromises to cater to the needs of distributors and other stake holders of film industry.

Anand (Parthiban) and Nandita (Chaya Singh) are newly married. However, Nandita, who loves her aunt’s son is unable to forget him and wants to split with Anand. She obtains a divorce and begins to lead an independent life. But Anand sets out on a mission to convince her and start life afresh. Does he succeed forms the crux of the film.

Parthiban is tailor-made for the character. He deserves special mention for his witty dialogues and body language. Chaya Singh springs surprise by effeciently essaying the role. Srikanth plays a cameo.

Music director Bharadwaj has come up with a commendable performance in a couple of songs. On the whole, though Vallamai Tharaiyo has missed out some tricks on the entertainment part, the director’s commitment and hard work deserve a pat, considering the fact that she is a fresher.

Ayudham Seyvom Movie Review


In a sense, almost all Tamil films are based on Gandhian principles. The hero fights for justice and finally truth alone will triumph. But Ayudham Seivom is a movie that strikes a direct chord with Mahatma’s policies, as the protagonist Sundar C takes the Ahimsa route (except the scene where he fights with Ponnambalam & Co) to establish justice.

Or, you can also call the film as a heady mix of Bollywood movies, based out of Gandhian principles. At the same time, director Udayan has followed all the rules of Tamil cinema, with a sole hope to woo the audience.

Sundar is a henchman who can be hired for any sort of rowdyism. One day, Manivannan asks him to steal the evidence related to the death of Collector Suganya from the elderly lawyer Vijayakumar.

When he is on his mission, Vijayakumar is accidentally killed. Even at the time of his death, the advocate wishes Sundar C ‘Vazhga Valamudan’. This brings a sea change in the rowdy’s heart. Now he wants justice for the deaths of Suganya and Vijayakumar. For that he takes the Gandhian route- Ahimsa.

It is not new for Sundar to don the role of a dhadha. He gives what the role demands from him. Anjali, the Katradhu Tamil girl learns glamour in this film. Vivek, Manivannan, Nasser, Malavika and Vindhya are also there.

Srikanth Deva’s music and K.S Selvaraj’s camera add strength to the script. Had the director Udayan avoided the preachy tone, Ayudham Seivom would have been a sharp entertainer.
