Kavya Shivashankar, 13 years Old , Kansas Girl, Wins National Spelling Bee

WASHINGTON — Cool and collected, Kavya Shivashankar wrote out every word on her palm and always ended with a smile. The 13-year-old Kansas girl saved the biggest smile for last, when she rattled off the letters to "Laodicean" to become the nation's spelling champion.

The budding neurosurgeon from Olathe, Kan., outlasted 11 finalists Thursday night to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee, taking home more than $40,000 in cash and prizes and, of course, the huge champion's trophy.

"I can't believe it happened," Kavya said. "It feels kind of unreal."

After spelling the winning word, which means lukewarm or indifferent in religion or politics, Kavya got huge hugs from father Mirle, mother Sandy and little sister Vanya.

"The competitiveness is in her," Mirle Shivashankar said. "But she doesn't show that. She still has that smile. That's her quality."

Kavya won in her fourth appearance at the bee, having finished 10th, eighth and fourth over the last three years. She enjoys playing the violin, bicycling, swimming and learning Indian classical dance, and her role model is Nupur Lala, the 1999 champion featured in the documentary "Spellbound."

"This is the moment we've been waiting for; it's a dream come true," Mirle said. "We haven't skipped meals, we haven't lost sleep, but we've skipped a lot of social time."

That would be any kind of celebration for Kavya's birthday. She turned 13 last week but was too busy planning for the bee to have a party.

Sun Mingming

At 7′9′ tall (236cm), Sun Mingming is the world’s second tallest man and the tallest professional basketball player ever.

Many of you may have heard of Sun, and likely to have seen him in his guest appearance on Rush Hour 3 or in the documentary, “Anatomy of a Giant,” that aired on theDiscovery Health channel, but rarely anyone has ever seen the 7-9 Chinese giant play basketball.

That doesn’t mean that the nearly-400lb, 25 year old hasn’t been playing basketball in attempts to reach his goal of the NBA. (Follow Sun Mingming’s journey around the world)

“The NBA is a realistic goal.” said Sun. “I love playing basketball and will do anything the NBA asks of me in order to get an opportunity.”

If Mingming ever makes it, he will be the tallest player in the NBA history, surpassing 7-7 players’ Manute Bol and Gheorghe Muresan. Sun’s countryman, Yao Ming, is the tallest active NBA player at 7′6.

A Long Three Years
Back in 2005, when Sun was 22 years old, he came to the United States and declared for the NBA Draft, but Sun was not selected due to his lack of speed and mobility at his size.

Within the same year, doctors discovered a benign brain tumour pressing against Sun’s pituitary gland. The tumour was preventing the proper production of testosterone, decreasing his stamina and endurance. Sun would have successful surgery to remove the tumor.

Undaunted, Mingming continued with his dream; he would spend the next several years on the move, playing in professional leagues around the world.

Sun first joined the USBL where he played for the Dodge City Legend.

He where he missed the first game because none of the uniforms fit him. Uniform or not, Ming would play sparingingly (and sometimes not at all) throughout the season registering 9 DNPs out of 32 games. And out of the 23 games Mingming did get into, he saw less than 5 minutes in half those game (13).

Sun Mingming’s best game came in a win over Long Island, he registered 4 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 block in 8 minutes of play. In 23 games of action, Sun totaled just 28 points, 25 Sun Mingming's gigantic handsrebounds, and 8 blocks.

After an unspectacular debut season in the USBL, Sun went to another professional league, and was signed by the Maryland Nighthawks of the ABA.

Then in March of 2007, Sun was signed by the Grand Rapids Flight (IBL) amidst much fanfare. After 14 games, he left Michigan to play for Fuerza Regia of the Mexican basketball league (LNBP).

After showing potential in 25 games for Fuerza, Sun would be forced to leave the league to have surgery done to his feet.

After recovering from his surgery, Sun would move back east, donning the jersey of Hamamastu Phoenix of the Japanese Basketball League (BJ).

In 49 games, Sun averaged 7.7 points and 5.7 rebounds per game as well as 67 dunks. The numbers don’t seem like much, but compared to where he was when he started with the USBL, it’s a significant improvement (and are likely career highs).

“I just want to keep playing basketball,” Sun said after the final game of the season. “Whether it’s here in Japan or in the United States, I hope to keep playing for at least 10 more years.”

Despite the stares, laughter, ignorance, XXXXXXL sweat shirts being too small and feet that are essentially mangled from wearing shoes that were always too small for him (size 20), Sun Mingming persists towards his goal of playing in the NBA.

Kavya Shivashankar of Olathe, Kansas, reacts to winning the Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday night.

The eighth-grader won $40,000 in cash and prizes for nailing the final word. Pronounced lay-odd-uh-see-an, the word means lukewarm or indifferent, particularly in matters of politics or religion.

This year's bee -- an event that has skyrocketed in popularity, thanks to exposure on television and in movies -- started on Tuesday in Washington with a record 293 spellers.

The competition went 15 rounds. Spellers ranged from 9 to 15 years old. According to the contest's Web site, 117 of the spellers speak languages other than English, and English was not the first language of 33 of the spellers.

The first National Spelling Bee was in 1925 and featured nine contestants.

In an event that has seen contestants visibly crack under the strain of the national spotlight in past years, Shivashankar -- competing in her fourth national finals -- appeared composed throughout.

As she spelled words that included "phoresy," "hydrargyrum" and "huisache," she calmly went through the routine of asking each word's pronunciations, origin and roots before ticking them off for the judges.

Her father, who is her spelling coach, would tap his foot in time as she spelled the words and at one point appeared so confident that he waved to someone while his daughter was in the middle of spelling a word.

Second-place finisher Tim Ruiter of Reston, Virginia, bowed out after misspelling "Maecenas," a generous patron of the arts.

Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, was in the audience to watch the finals, which were nationally televised on ABC.

Shivashankar attends California Trail Junior High School. Her hobbies including swimming, cycling and traditional Indian dance, according to the contest's Web site. She plans to become a neurosurgeon.

Howe Caverns

May 22, 1842: Lester Howe goes to investigate why his cows stand at the bottom of the hill in the hot summer months. Lester owned a farm about 40 miles west of Albany, the capital of New York. Lester's cows grazed in the same spot during heat waves. Lester went to investigate the area and a strong, cool breeze came from behind a stand of bushes. He dug out the bushes and found an entrance to a cave. He and his neighbor, Henry Wetsel, excavated and explored the find. The entrance was on Henry's property and Lester bought the land in February 1843 for $100 (≈ $2,200 today).

The cave was opened to visitors in 1843 and as business improved, a hotel was built over the entrance. Howe ran into financial difficulties and sold part of his land and then a limestone quarry purchased the remainder. Since the quarry owned the property with the natural entrance, the Howe Caverns were closed to the public. In 1927, an organization formed to re-open the caverns. They spent two years creating a second entrance. They installed elevators, brick walks, lighting, and handrails. The site re-opened on Memorial Day in 1929.

The caverns reach 156 feet below the surface. The walls are made from two types of limestone (Coeymans and Manilus) from two different periods of Earth's history, as well as rock called Rondout waterred. The rock layers formed during the Silurian and Devonian periods more than 400 million years ago. There are few fossils, indicating the rocks are older than most fossils. However long ago they started, the caverns are still "under construction." Water continues to ooze, seep, drip, and flow changing ever so slowly, the cavern's configuration.

There is little biological life in the caverns. Some mold has grown around the lights and a few bats live near the unused natural entrance. Stalagmites (Speleothems) form in the caverns as carbon dioxide and water combine and dissolve limestone as gravity draws everything down. When the water reaches a cave, the carbon dioxide is released and the calcite re-deposits on the walls, ceilings, and floors. Tours at Howe Caverns are given every day. The tour takes about 80 minutes and includes walking and a boat ride. The tour takes the visitors past the Bridal Altar (almost 600 weddings have been performed there). The caverns remain at a constant 52º F and there is 70-75% humidity at all times, so dress appropriately.

Spelling Bee 2009 | National Spelling Bee

Kavya Shivashankar, an eighth grader from Olathe, Kansas, correctly spelled L-a-o-d-i-c-e-a-n to win the 2009 Scripps National Spelling Bee Thursday night. Kavya won at the end of a championship round in which runner-up Tim Ruiter was eliminated on "maecenas" and third-place finisher Aishwarya Pastapur was eliminated on "menhir."

Making her fourth appearance in the national bee, Kavya looked calm and collected throughout, never wavering as she spelled words like "phoresy" in the championship round. (The other championship round words that were spelled correctly were antonomasia, bouquiniste, oriflamme, guayabera, isagoge and sophrosyne.)

In earlier rounds, Kavya effortlessly rattled off seemingly challenging words like "hydrargyrum," "blancmange" and "baignoire."

Having finished in the Top 10 each of the last three years, Kavya was considered one of the favorites entering the bee. A student at California Trail Junior High School, Kavya enjoys playing the violin, bicycling, swimming, and learning Indian classical dance. She plans to become a neurosurgeon.

Maecenas

the imagist has been becoming too much of a formula for me recently so I decided to look for a new challenge in writing. The only thing I can think of that is grueling but rewarding was long form prose. So here's the first excerpt from a burgeoning attempt to "fictionalize" some of my adventures in fashion. The following is an introduction to a seminal figure I met very early on when I first ventured into the business.

My maecenas, The Maven - to put it in her odd and reverse diction - was offering me this very old Stephen Sprouse coat.

“Vintage, ” she insisted “ From the S line which was downstairs in the 99 Wooster Street Store. The better things in the hundreds you'd find on the second floor and for that you got the double S ... and the gorgeous white blazers with the "God Save New York" graffiti and those brilliant safety pin jackets were all on the couture third floor. Full name! This, I think is SS . Yes it is , " she says, consulting the label at my nape.

Except this here particular Sprouse coat was made of a nubbly black fake fur better suited to an oversize teddy bear in FAO Schwartz

"I look like a pimp." I whined

"But a pimp with provenance. I got that from Slyvia Miles who bought it for Richard Gere."

"Funny how it ain't in Richard Gere's possession right now," I frowned

"Trust me, a vintage Sprouse is a good find. You'll thank me one day."

One far away day, I thought looking at my own self with complete suspicion. Shudder to think what the brothers on Nostrand were to do with me if I were to cross their path on some fateful night in this thing .Well I'll just have to not take shortcuts. Or the subway.

Her kindness was calculated to lessen the degree of embarrassment my lingering dedication to the grunge aesthetic may have brought her. And so she's given me in the past three years, everything from piles of beautifully cut double breasted coats that she made me wear over incredible plush Marc Jacobs cashmere sweaters. Then there were the suits custom made for her ex-husband, 20 pounds heavier than me but still...who was I to argue with a Huntsman and Row castoff. And it's true, in the years later I came to understand the true value of what she was giving me.

I called her "The Maven" , but her real name is Louisa Schiano, English born with Italian lineage, which she often times like to hint “went back ” though that's always a very easy thing to say, if not prove. Her time spent consorting with a melange of Latin drag queens in Escuelita and her minor key aristopals at Cipriani had corrupted her good middle class English diction into something schizophrenic. It was all the more entertaining for it. Its not so much that she had melded a myriad of linguistic styles into one, it's that she hop-scotched from one idiom to another, tangling slangs and tones and accents in a haphazard conversational spray. It was like listening to Anita Pallenberg in one of her drug addled free association drifts in "Performance" (Louisa's all time favorite film)

The same thing held for her styling, which could be just as addled as her speech. Showrooms might have admonished her upon penalty of blacklisting that she was not to mix designers but head to toe was anathema to her. In fact quite often the clothes would go out the window. We had met when she was styling a gig for Ike Ude's then fledgling magazine, aRUDE and I was the talent . She was very much Ike's friend long before she took me up. (Of course after she took up with me, the friendship with Ike quickly devolved into behind-the-back sniping and scurrulous rumors on his part, all of which only made me more interesting to her. Paulo was the photographer in question, and the next thing I knew Maven and Ike decided the clothes could not work and I was to do the shoot nude except for his body paint and some ready mades on her part.

"How Haring," I thought and said as much which led Ike to give me this long and stern lecture as to why body painting much more belonged to a Nigerian artist than it could ever to Kieth Haring via Bill T Jones. So I shut my mouth and turned my face to the seamless like a dunce in his punishment corner while they painted and snapped and stroked and tickled my then barely post-adolescent body. The Maven concocted a necklace made of gold safety pins and empty thread spools, chicken bones and rusty old keys that brought thoughts of tetanus to mind. Paulo sat back laughing at the silent duel as Ike applied yet more gold paint to and The Maven adjusted the thin cord around my waist, all to the endless loop of "Slave To The Rhythm" in the background.

8 hours later The Maven and I were pals particularly because I didn't bother to dress but slouched around comfortably naked while they changed film and ate lunch and discussed looks and consulted storyboards. After all that champagne my shyness about my thin build had ended and my long long career as an exhibitionist was off to a roaring start.

The best thing about The Maven in those early days was that she knew everything about everybody. How she could hold such a vast body of knowledge always led me to speculate about her age, which could be mid 40's though there were those who were pushing her chronological all the way up to 60. I told her about my travails with Claudia and of course she had information to impart.

“We love Claudia so but she's like the original automatic model. No matter what, there was nothing they could do to get the fraulein out of her at Chanel. Clomp Clomp Clomp. But its not her fault that she's never had any life experiences”

“I would say months of group hugs with the Wu Tang and love scenes with Allen Houston might give a fraulein some life experience.”

"Perhaps but I'm sure it was all an out of body for her. Did you ever hear about the showdown between her and Amanada Lear?"

"Amanda Lear?"

"Sex change 70's scene queen. Anyway we're at a very nice book party at Claridge's... Claudia to Amanda “I just read your book. Its wonderful. Who wrote it for you? Amanda to Claudia “ You bought my book! How wonderful darling. Who read it for you?”

"Was there hair pulling?"

"Not really . Just a lot of turning on the heels and tossing of blonde extensions"

"Wow..".was all I could muster picturing the showdown between mannequin and manque

"Yes I know. They did keep the entertainment going."

And that may have been Maven's crucible. I would see her at New York Fashion Week slumped front row after front row in her battered old Chanel motorcycle boots and massive black wraparounds in a style later to be made popular by U2's Bono, sulking without reservation at the beige parade marching past her.)

The new corporate order than ruled fashion bewildered her and very visibly so. This was not what she had signed on for. But how she loved a salon de refuse, especially when it was more refuse than salon . Anywhere she ought not to be was where she was front and center. She was there in a dusty East Village Legion Hall, when the last model came striding out for Miguel Androver in Quinten Crisps dusty mattress ticking redone as a coat. Via her tour of duty in Androver's showroom, she came back with the first reports of the epicene beauty of the Dominican androgyne Omahyra Mota and when British Vogue wouldn't touch the proposition, our Maven high tailed the concept over to Helmut Newton who of course got it at first glance for German Vogue.

She was the first to abandon Helmut Lang in lieu of Nicholas Ghesquiere even when his oevure for Balenciaga consisted mainly of those dubious oversize sweaters with kitsch prints of German shephards on the front. But she saw the future in them which makes her a genius in the eyes of her contemporaries.

She liked nothing appropriate. The only Prada she ever approved of was the bat cape collection with the short lived Spanish sensation Elenora in first exit and her favorite Gucci campaign ever was the coffin series lensed by Inez and Vinoodh and cast with a slightly plump Kate.

“I much prefer Kate plump , " she would growl, when the English icon tottered past in black jeans and ballet flats through the lobby of The Mercer. I believe The Maven still has that Pyrex breastplate from the Betty Catroux tribute debut Tom Ford YSL collection on a sideboard in her living room. She was a troubled woman and that was stirring to me

BRTS project faces uncertainty

Another ambitious project after the metro rail, the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) is facing uncertainty.

The consultant of the BRTS project -- Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) -- has been untraceable for the past four months.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) authorities said they had been making attempts to reach the CIDA executives through phone calls and letters but there has been no response for the past few months.

"The consultant should have given detailed designs of the BRTS project and cost estimations by March 2009. But, they have not been in touch with the municipal corporation since January this year," GHMC additional commissioner (traffic and transport) S Subba Rao told TOI.

The CIDA has submitted reports on project feasibility, environmental and social assessment and preliminary design for the 18.8 km corridor proposed from Rethibowli to JNTU, Kukatpally.

The agency reportedly did not respond to an official letter sent to the director of Canadian Partnership Branch, CIDA, Canada, on April 30, 2009. Earlier, another letter had been written to him in January this year. But there was no response either from the CIDA or local representatives even after this letter.

The agency initially surveyed and submitted a project report on social assessment in Feb 2008 to the state government and evinced interest in conduct a detailed study for the BRTS corridor.

As it came forward to undertake a free feasibility study, the Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA) agreed for this.

It was decided that the GHMC would provide infrastructure facilities for the BRTS like road widening, while APSRTC would operate buses on this route. The estimated cost of the project is between Rs 5 and Rs 15 crore per km.

A special purpose vehicle (SPV) was also planned by UMTA to monitor the BRTS project as it is a top priority project for the city.

The Centre is promoting BRTS in various cities by giving funds under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) as 82 per cent of urban people depend on the public transport system.

"If the CIDA drops out the BRTS project will be delayed for one more year," a GHMC official said.

More bombs found in east Orlando

The Army Corps of Engineers announced Wednesday that it found more munitions on a former World War II-era bombing range in southeast Orlando and that the items will be destroyed tomorrow morning by demolition.

Since July 2007, the Corps have found more than 400 bombs and rockets and 14 tons of munitions debris on the former 12,483-acre Pinecastle Jeep Range.

The most recent munitions, remains of several M30 incendiary bombs, were found on some vacant land, commonly called the Mockingbird property, off Lee Vista Boulevard.

Many bombs were found last year under the property of Odyssey Middle School as well as in and near the planned developments of Crowntree Lakes, Vista Lakes and Tivoli Woods.

The Corps has spent $10 million so far on its clean up efforts.

Exactly why homes and a school were built along the fringe of a former bombing range is the topic of several ongoing class action lawsuits.

Corps spokeswoman Amanda Ellison said that the most recent ordnance discovered is scheduled to be destroyed Thursday about 10 a.m. and that the public is not in danger.

The items need to be destroyed because they might still contain thermite, a flammable compound, even after six decades in the ground.

Forbes Riley's Tips for Success

Forbes Riley is an advertising queen. You may not recognize the name, but it’s almost guaranteed that you have seen one of her many infomercials or product spotlights on QVC or the Home Shopping Network. She has been on QVC for almost 20 years, HSN for the past three years and is known for the amazing way she sells her products. Riley has even become known as the Julia Roberts of infomercials.

According to Riley, one of the most important things you can do, whether you are still in school or just out of college is brand yourself.

Riley says, “Look at yourself as a product. What do you want your image to be? Be what you want to be.”

It doesn’t matter what you think of yourself; however you are perceived is reality.

“Products are not born, they are created,” believes Riley.

Riley went onto say that you can be branded as the reliable one, the slacker, the go-to guy/gal or whatever you want. It’s easy to forget that people are constantly watching you. Because first impressions can be very difficult to shake it’s important to make the first one a good one.

For Riley her goal was to have an amazing career. Along the way she found she had an uncanny ability to sell products. People bring her products when they have no idea how to sell them. Because of her background she knows how important it is to find the perfect market to sell products.

Like a product, Riley says to find your perfect market. Figure out exactly what you want and brand yourself to be “sold” to that market. Riley has six secrets to success. They may not guarantee you’ll be a millionaire, but you will at least be happier and more successful than you would be without trying them.

Forbes Riley’s Six Secrets of Success:

1. Brand yourself.
2. Love what you do.
3. Understand the fundamentals of a conversation
4. Have a plan (goes along with the elevator pitch).
5. Quit following the path your on if your not happy.

George Strait: ACM Artist of the Decade

George Strait is honored as ACM's artist of the decade and saluted by his peers, who perform some of his biggest hits in concert. Performers include: Alan Jackson; Tim McGraw; Keith Urban; Taylor Swift; Brooks and Dunn; Sugarland; Martina McBride; Faith Hill; Toby Keith; LeAnn Rimes; Miranda Lambert; Blake Shelton; Jamie Foxx; Lee Ann Womack; Dierks Bentley; John Rich; Jamey Johnson.

The famously taciturn George Strait may not say a lot, but when he sings he speaks volumes. The Texas-born troubadour rode into Nashville on a song more than 25 years ago and is now the owner of an amazing 57 No. 1 singles on the country charts. It's no wonder the Academy of Country Music selected him as its artist of the decade, joining previous legends Marty Robbins (1960s), Loretta Lynn (1970s), Alabama (1980s) and Garth Brooks (1990s). Fortunately for Strait, he doesn't have to say much during tonight's all-star tribute. He gets to sit back and listen to a who's who of country artists literally sing his praises, such as Alan Jackson, Tim McGraw, Keith Urban, Taylor Swift, Sugarland and Martina McBride.

Practical, effective fitness and workout tips for the gym or at home

“Clench your stomach when you walk,” is a useful and practical tip I received from my first trainer. It helped correct my posture and undeniably contributed to those elusive abs that most guys work so hard to achieve. Incidentally, the elusiveness of “getting abs” comes from eating the wrong diet. If excess fat exists, then the abdominals simply will not picture “pop,” no matter how many crunches you do in a day.

“Daily nutrition is also extremely dependent on the appearance of your midsection,” said Suyumi Quiroz, trainer and group fitness class instructor at Equinox Fitness Clubs. “Abdominal exercises can indeed strengthen and tone the muscles, but those muscles are underneath the “subcutaneous” layer of fat.”

Tyron Piteau, owner of The Maker's Body Personal Training and Resurrect Your Body Boot Camp, agrees, “for maximum benefits, you must seek to maintain a tight pillar position during all movements by actively pulling your navel to your spine, engaging your glutes, and maintaining a straight line from the heels through the shoulders.” His workout mantras are testament, “'suck in your gut;' 'tuck your butt under;' 'round your lower back;' 'give yourself a wedgie;' and 'be flat like a diving board.'"

The whole clenching and contracting method can be applied to almost all muscle-heavy workouts. Michael Arone of Tiger Fitness Los Angeles suggests that “the contraction is the first step in the stimulation of growth.” He advises that “at the top of each movement, contract the muscles that you are using. For example, when you perform a biceps curl, contract your biceps as hard as you can at the top of the movement, when your elbow is flexed, before lowering the weight.”

Shocker: NBA All-Star Dirk Nowitzki Allows Pregnant Fia

This story has fallen through the sports cracks as the NBA Playoffs have unfolded. It deserves to be part of the national dialogue under the category "professional athletes behaving like total cads toward women."

In short, here it is: Dirk Nowitzki, the 11-year power forward of the Dallas Mavericks, has a girlfriend. She's been living with him for the past year and a half. In fact, he's her sole means of support, which isn't a strain since he makes $18 million a year. She's attended games, sitting in his personal seats. She sat with his visiting father on at least one occasion, and Dirk's also met her mother from St. Louis. The two lovebirds became engaged this past New Year's Eve, a mere five months ago.

It turns out, however, that she has a criminal past. Specifically, a conviction in Missouri for felony forgery, passing checks that were not her's, apparently. She was on probation when she moved to Texas and then failed to complete the process. That was 11 years ago. Then, five years ago, she was charged with using a bad credit card for $10,000 worth of dental work. That's apparently the extent of her rap sheet.

Here's Dirk's: He meets her, dates her, she ultimately moves in with him for a long time, and now she's pregnant and he's letting her sit behind bars. His German coach supposedly never liked her, perhaps because she's 37, seven years older than Dirk, or perhaps because she's African-American, who knows? There is gossip that team owner Mark Cuban disapproved of the relationship.

At some point, it was reported that a private investigator was hired in advance of a prenuptial agreement and dug up her history. While Dirk and his team were at a playoff game in Denver, law enforcement showed up unannounced at his $8 million mansion (in George W. Bush's and Cuban's Preston Hollow neighborhood) and hauled her away.

When Dirk returned to town, he said nothing, and the local media willfully accepted his silence. After all, the playoffs were in full swing, and he's the local hero, so the visceral reaction was to pile on against her. The Dallas Morning News got the ball rolling, bringing up strip clubs (she was a waitress). Commenters on its website called her a skank, a ho, you name it. Shortly after the Mavs were eliminated in the second round, Dirk fled to his native Germany for the off-season.

Meanwhile, it's been almost a month, and she's still in jail and still pregnant. Why Nowitzki didn't simply write a check to handle her relatively minor debt to society (for him, anyway), and then get her out of his house and life -- if that's what he wanted -- is a mystery. $100,000 to wash his hands and then longterm child support pending a paternity test is what he was looking at. It would have been so simple, and out of the media spotlight.

The approach he's chosen is downright cruel to her, ultimately penny-wise and pound foolish for him, and makes the 7-footer look like, well, a tiny little fascist.

He's now letting his attorney do the talking. The hired gun's initial stab at legal advocacy was to call her a liar, claiming she wasn't given a pregnancy test in jail. Ah, but it turns out she was given that test, and it came back positive. The hired gun was wrong.

We don't know how much she told Dirk about herself. She claims she told him some, but that she downplayed it out of embarrassment. A friend says he called her his "little jailbird."

In any event, he moved her into his home for 18 months and assumed financial responsibility for her. An expensive engagement ring followed (over $100,000, she says, but he's got it), and the promise of a life together. There's home video shot in a happy love nest that seems to have seeded a junior Dirkster. Yet now, she's been kicked aside over her checkered past.

Her best bet is to find a sharp lawyer to handle her legitimate domestic claims with Dirk, especially in light of how he has behaved toward her at the finish line. And he needs to locate his conscience.

This is bad theater all around.

Pro Cup with wild finish at Langley

Clay Rogers emerged from a mad scramble in Turn 4 on the final lap and claimed his first victory of the season in the Hampton Virginia 250 presented by Racing Electronics for the USARacing Pro Cup Series, the headlining event of Saturday evening’s program at Langley Speedway.

Caleb Holman was quickest in afternoon time trials, at 84.987 mph. Local standout Woody Howard qualified on the outside pole.

By lap 13, Howard had established a four-length lead over Holman, while third-place Drew Herring had fallen nearly half a straightaway behind the leaders.

Derek Kale led from lap 69 through lap 130. On lap 130, Rogers used the outside lane to overtake Kale for the lead. On lap 140, Kale skated wide in Turn 2 and gave way to Howard, Herring and Brandon Ward. Rogers took advantage of the jumble and widened his lead to over half a straightaway.

Kale continued to struggle and saw his night come to a premature end on lap 145 when he spun in Turn 2 and collected Matt Lofton. Setting the lineup, Rogers and Howard ran 1-2, followed by Herring, Ward and Bobby Gill.

Three more cautions quickly followed, with the third coming as Gill, trying to clear Morgan’s lapped car, delivered a rap to Morgan’s rear bumper and triggered a multi-car melee on the backstretch. Herring and Ward were among those who were swept up in the incident.

At the 200-lap mark, Rogers was up by three lengths over Howard. The seventh yellow flag waved on lap 218 for debris on the frontstretch. Gathering for a restart, Rogers, Howard, Billy Bigley, Jr. and rookie Lucas Ransone made up the top four, while Gill had crept back into fifth.

Back under way, Rogers quickly fashioned a two-length edge over Howard. Behind them, Gill slipped around Ransone for fourth, then picked off Bigley for third on lap 230.

On lap 235, Herring and Brett Butler scuffled along the backstretch and Butler made contact with the outside wall, slowing immediately. Eventually, he rolled to a halt on lap 240, bringing out the last of the race’s eight caution flags.

Six laps remained when the green flag reappeared. Rogers eked out a slim margin over Howard as the field hit the back straightaway. That advantage was short-lived, though, as Howard ducked under the leader on lap 246.

Rogers and Howard raced door-to-door for the lead with Gill lurking just behind, in third. Exiting Turn 4, with the white flag in sight, Rogers skittered wide, seemingly opening the door for Howard.

Rogers was credited with leading lap 249. By the time the field reached Turn 1 on lap 250, though, he was in third. Howard was out front for a brief moment, but Gill was hard-charging down low and took the lead in Turn 1.

As the leaders headed into Turn 3 for the last time, Gill’s effort was undone by what he would later report as a power steering problem. He clipped the edge of the infield and shot up the track in Turns 3 and 4.

Howard ducked to the inside of Gill in a bid for the win. At the same time, Rogers slipped underneath Howard and got a mighty run off the corner. Unbelievably, Ransone had managed to work his way under Rogers, looking to swipe a victory.

At the line, Rogers was the winner by 58-thousandths of a second — half a car-length — over Ransone. Gill was third, followed by Howard and Bigley.

“That was the most awesome race I’ve ever been a part of, those last two or three laps. I had my ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’ about this racetrack when we got here. I thought it was a little small for these type of cars, but, man, did it put on some great racing,” said Rogers.

The win was worth $8,000 to Rogers, while Ransone was the Raybestos Rookie of the Race. Barrett, Agnew and Purkhiser deadlocked for the Aaron’s Do The Math Hard Charger prize, each driver advancing seven positions.

In the evening’s other feature events:

C.E. Falk took the lead on lap 53 and rolled to his third victory of the season in the Hampton Convention and Visitors Bureau 100 for the Crossroads Fuel Service Late Model Stock Cars, the track’s NASCAR Whelen All-American Series featured division.

Jammie Goode started on the pole and led all 40, caution-free laps to post his second win in a late afternoon feature for the Old Point National Bank Grand Stocks.

Microsoft Zune HD: But Will it Play Games?

Microsoft's splashy, slightly angular, just-divulged Zune HD will play movies, surf the web, and snag digital radio feeds, but all I want to know is: will it play games? Redmond, Washington isn't talking...yet.

No one's touting the Zune HD as a gaming platform at this point. But it could be a gaming device, and I'd bet my life that it'll be at least some kind. In my view, Microsoft needed to announce the new mobile part's existence beyond the breathless clamor of the Electronic Entertainment Expo next week to avoid branding it a games-primarily device. Which it isn't.

It's a media playback gizmo, which — like Sony's PlayStation Portable (with the right hookup) — can output video to an actual TV. In fact where the PSP outputs sub-DVD-quality video, the Zune HD appears to support up to 720p (actual high-def).

But forget about the PSP for a second: Microsoft's says the new Zune HD's specifically designed to go rounds with Apple's iPod Touch — also a gaming device, but not (yet) battling after the same audience that constitutes the 50 or so million PSP's in the wild, or over 100 million Nintendo DS's. It's for you, per its market positioning, whether you care about a handheld version of Halo or not.

Second's up, and I want to spotlight the fact that Microsoft's promising to demo the Zune HD at E3 next week — in particular, how it'll integrate with their Xbox Live Marketplace TV/video service. Movie playback on both the Xbox 360 and Zune HD? Already confirmed. And then there's the Zune's tasty new OLED touchscreen to consider. Sounds like a shoe-in for a little recreational thumb-tapping.

Would the Zune HD be a viable gaming platform? As far as content delivery's concerned, why not? It's already being touted — by way of Xbox Live Marketplace — as playing with the Xbox 360 mothership. If it can dine on Xbox-360-dished HD videos, it's a shoe-in for game delivery.

Regarding hardware, that's harder to say (actually it's impossible, since Microsoft didn't divulge detailed tech specs) but no one really thought of the iPod as a games device, and look at it now, running games like Prey and bazillions of so-called "casual" titles.

Mike Tyson's Daughter Dies After Hanging Accident

Mike Tyson's 4-year-old daughter, Exodus Tyson, has died after accidentally hanging herself on a piece of exercise equipment at home.

Phoenix Police Department Officer James Holmes told TVGuide.com that Exodus Tyson died at 11:45 a.m. (MST) in what he called a "tragic accident." An autopsy is expected to be performed. Holmes said the family is asking for privacy in the matter.

Tyson's daughter was put on life support after she was discovered Monday with her neck caught in a treadmill cord that hangs from the machine's console. Her mother had removed the cord and tried to revive her before she was rushed to a Phoenix hospital.

The former heavyweight boxing champ was in Las Vegas, but flew to Phoenix immediately after the accident.

The Real Housewives of New Jersey is TV program on Bravo channel Television Network. The Real Housewives of New Jersey first season started on May 12, 2009. Last week of Real Housewives of New Jersey, it was revealed that The Real Housewives of New Jersey have lazy, entitled, overindulged, poorly educated kids. Where’s that ex husband? Is there a mug shot? Danielle Staub is the Real Housewives of New Jersey diva of drama. Danielle Staub - from alleged mug shots, to phone sex, and sex in a restaurant offers - has covered a lot in just two tv weeks.

Nevertheless, the first two episodes of Real Housewives of New Jersey proves it’s all Danielle Staub’s show so far.

Let’s recap. Pull up a chair.

In episode one Danielle Staub reportedly covers just a bit in the storyline. What you may ask? Phone sex. Oh yes. This is not your mother’s Bravo channel anymore. And the chatter-luv didn’t just start yesterday, reveals Danielle Staub. Nope, it’s gone on for 2 years with a guy she doesn’t know.

Oh, but then there is episode 2. There is an offer to perform an oral service on another guy in a restaurant.

Star Magazine reported that at the beginning of April Danielle Staub was arrested at her Wayne, NJ mansion. Apparently, Danielle Staub has yet to pay her divorce lawyers because her ex-hubby - some exercise equipment manufacturer hasn’t anted up on her divorce settlement. I don’t know how much Danielle Staub stands to gain in the settlement, but her lawyers fees are in the six figures and they want their money. So, they issued a civil action contempt warrant.

Helio Castroneves Wins Third Indianapolis 500

INDIANAPOLIS — Pumping his fist as he took the checkered flag and breaking down in tears when he was done, Helio Castroneves capped a perfect month of May with the biggest win of all Sunday at the Indianapolis 500.

Castroneves became the ninth driver to win the historic race three times, and his timing couldn't have been better. Just 5 1/2 weeks ago, he was aquitted of most charges at a federal tax evasion trial, and the remaining count was thrown out on Friday.

Instead of going to prison for as long as six years, Castroneves pulled his red-and-white machine into Victory Lane at the Brickyard. No wonder he was sobbing when team owner Roger Penske leaned in to give him a hug.

Click here for photos of Helio Castroneves.

"Thanks for giving my life back," the 34-year-old Brazilian told his boss, who earned his record 15th win at Indy.

Castroneves completed a clean sweep of every Indy prize, also claiming the pole position and winning the pit-stop competition. Throw in the federal government's decision to drop the last of the tax charges just minutes before he went out for the final practice, and "this is the best month of May ever," said Castroneves, now only one win away from joining the most elite group of all: four-time Indy winners A.J. Foyt, Al Unser and Rick Mears.

Castroneves pulled away over the final laps to beat Dan Wheldon and Danica Patrick, who eclipsed her historic fourth-place finish as a rookie in 2005 by crossing the strip of bricks in third.

Patrick, however, was never really a factor.

Click here for photos of the Indy 500.

This day belonged to Castroneves, who pumped his fist all the way down the final straightaway.

"I want to climb the fence," said the driver known as "Spiderman," referring to his signature celebration.

Then he did just that, climbing out of his car after the victory lap and scaling the fence along the main grandstand with his pit crew. Someone tossed him a green-and-yellow Brazilian flag.

The victory was clearly popular with the quarter of a million fans who turned out on a sweltering late spring day and were on their feet, cheering and waving these caps as Castroneves sped around the 2.5-mile oval for the final time.

"You guys kept me strong," Castroneves told the crowd. "You guys are the best. I'm honored to have fans like you.

"Let's celebrate now!"

Crashes took out some of the biggest names in the field, including Tony Kanaan, Marco Andretti and Graham Rahal. The most frightening wreck occurred on lap 173, when Brazilians Vitor Meira and Raphael Matos got together going into the first turn.

Meira's car veered head-on into the padded outside wall. He was removed from the car, put on a stretcher and taken to a nearby hospital complaining of severe lower-back pain.

The lengthy caution period ensured that everyone had enough fuel to get to the finish. When the race restarted with 17 laps to go, Castroneves got a great jump on Wheldon and Patrick and pulled away to win by nearly 2 seconds, more than two football fields.

"I had a really good car," Patrick said. "Oh well, what are you going to do?"

Added Wheldon, "At the end, I just didn't have enough for Helio."

It was clear from the start that Team Penske and Chip Ganassi Racing had the strongest cars. Castroneves led 66 laps and teammate Ryan Briscoe ran out front for 11. On the Ganassi side, defending 500 champion Scott Dixon set the pace for a race-best 73 laps, while his teammate Dario Franchitti, who won in 2007 and returned to Indy this year after a disappointing foray into stock cars, led the other 50.

Dixon's powerful car lost its edge near the end of the more than three-hour race and he slipped back to sixth, failing to become the first driver since Castroneves in 2001-02 to win back-to-back 500s. Franchitti had a problem in the pits late in the race and couldn't make up the lost ground, settling for seventh.

Two drivers who don't even have full-time rides in the IndyCar series crossed the line behind Patrick. Townsend Bell was fourth, while Will Power — who filled in while Castroneves was on trial — finished fifth in a third Team Penske car.

It may have been a perfect month for Castroneves, but it wasn't a perfect race. He had problems with his radio all day, and there were gearbox issues when he came into the pits. But he knew what to do on the track.

"Once I got in front, it was never look back," Castroneves said.

Rounding out the top 10 were Ed Carpenter in eighth, Paul Tracy and Hideki Mutoh. Tracy was racing at Indy for the first time since the disputed 2002 event, when a late caution froze the field just as he was going past Castroneves. The outspoken Canadian is still convinced he won that race — his appeal was turned down — but there was no doubt about this one.

It was Castroneves all the way.

The race had barely started when Mario Moraes drifted to the outside and made contact with Andretti, sending both cars into the wall going into the second turn.

The Andretti curse remains in force at Indy. Marco said there was nothing he could do when the 20-year-old Moraes pinched him into the wall.

"The kid doesn't get it, and he never will," said Andretti, only 22 himself. "He's just clueless out there."

Neither driver was hurt, and Andretti even got back on the track for 56 laps to finish 30th in the 33-car field.

Rahal, son of 1986 Indy winner Bobby Rahal, crashed on the 56th lap in virtually the same spot where he slammed into the wall a year earlier. He started fourth and was running fifth when his car went high coming out of the fourth turn and slammed the barrier. He was not injured.

"I got mid-corner and the car just went straight. It was the same exact thing as last year," the 20-year-old Rahal said. "I felt I was being patient. I thought I wasn't going to have any problem, and all of a sudden it just went."

Kanaan was running third when something snapped in his No. 11 car, sending it straight into the wall at about 190 mph. The helpless machine slid through the third turn and slammed into the SAFER barrier again before finally coming to a stop.

The popular Kanaan wasn't seriously hurt, but he sure was aching after the big hit.

"I went on quite a ride," he said after getting checked at the infield media center. "I knew it was going to be a big one."

It was another painful Indy moment for the hard-luck Brazilian, who had led the race a record seven straight years — but is still seeking his first 500 win.

"Me and this place," Kanaan said with a sigh.

Kung Fu Hustle

As Superman can attest, it’s not a good idea to release the game based on your movie too long after the movie comes out. Though as Luke Skywalker and his fellow Jedi can agree, all is forgiven when your game is as good, or even better than, your movie. Which might be the saving grace for Kung Fu Hustle, Sony Online’s action MMO for the PC. Though the movie came out more than five years ago, and the game’s release date is still to be determined, it still looks like it’ll be a good one. At least that was our impression when we played the game at a SOE event in Los Angeles last week.

At its core, Kung Fu Hustle is a 2D side-scrolling beat-’em-up, though one where you can move up and down as well as side-to-side. Though it’s not picky about it, you don’t need to perfect aligned with someone horizontally to hit them.

Once you create your own character, you pick a fighting style, which include both long-range attacks and melee ones. As you progress, you can collect or buy new moves, which is made easier by the game being set in a version of China where people drop gold and experience points when they die. One of the guys we played as, for example, enjoyed throwing an endless supply of knives, while another threw an arsenal of elbows. You can even attack as you get up from being knocked down, or do a jump attack by, well, jumping before you attack. Funny how that works.

All of this was made fairly easy by the controls, which were as responsive as Microsoft Word. Though, as it is a PC game, there are certain limitations. You can’t, for example, do a normal attack and move at the same time; when you throw a punch, your feet are firmly planted in the ground. Well, unless you’re jumping. The game will also support PC controllers, which could make this a moot point.

How the game works as an MMO, however, is still somewhat unanswered. Though there will be side quests as well as a major story, and characters can be leveled up to fifty, it doesn’t seem like the game will have the kind of “virtual world” motif as World Of WarCraft.

It’s also not very cinematic, as the game’s connection to the film seems somewhat superficial: There are a couple settings from the film, while the film’s director and star Stephen Chow has been very involved in the project. But it is not a direct translation of the film, so while you will have to appreciate side-scrolling beat-’em-ups, you don’t need to have seen, or even enjoyed, the movie to appreciate this game. Which, potentially, might be a good thing.

The game is currently in beta in a few Asian markets and US release plans have not been discussed at this time.

Los Angeles Marathon 2009

Los Angeles Marathon officials can rest easy today.

They caught a huge break from Mother Nature. The marathon isn't expected to be run in sweltering temperatures. There won't be cause for pacing and worrying and sweaty brows and clenched jaws.

There's probably no need to say prayers and wait and hope.

They're awfully lucky. They rolled the dice, and apparently won't get burned.

Next year, remove the gamble from the equation.

Today is May 25. Running the race this late in the year in Southern California was the most ridiculous idea ever. That anyone ever considered it is laughable.

Clearly, no one who signed off on this has ever run a marathon.

But why consult the people who pay the registration fees and pound the pavement around Los Angeles for 26.2 miles and give officials a reason to have an event to make a mess of, anyway?

Thankfully, once soaring temperatures have given way to a 60-something degree day mixed with clouds and sun. The threat of heat-related deaths shouldn't be a factor.

The marathon can't be left to chance again, and it's all up to the Los Angeles City Council.

When the race date was moved from the first Sunday in March, when it has been scheduled since its inception, to the end of May, runners were justifiably outraged.

The race was and still is broken, there's no question, and has had many problems before Frank McCourt took over ownership rights last year. The date was not one of

those problems. McCourt wants the Los Angeles Marathon to be on par with Boston and Chicago, but the race doesn't attract elite runners and isn't even a must-event for Angelenos anymore. There's work to be done, and this public-relations nightmare didn't help.

The city council needs to approve the proposed change. Three city council members - Tom LaBonge, Janice Hahn and Bill Rosendahl - introduced the measure and earlier this month it passed an initial test of approval but still needs approval of the entire council.

The city council was pressured into moving the race to a Monday in order to not disrupt services at churches that sit along the marathon's 26.2-mile route.

It's one Sunday a year.

Instead of working with neighboring churches to allow parishioners alternate locations or times for worship, the city council caved and voted to move the marathon date.

About 14,000 runners are expected this year, down about 3,000 from last year. And last year's nearly 17,000-runner field was down a few thousand from the previous year. The fear of heat probably wasn't the only reason runners retreated, but this was a blow, and organizers must be sweating it out. If you lose runners one year, it will be hard to lure them back.

Many are surely running in Rock 'N' Roll Marathon on May 31 in San Diego. When the Los Angeles Marathon was in March, some runners participated in both. Those who did were forced to make a choice this year.

Yet another reason the city council needs to approved the change, and do it quickly.

Race organizers were hoping to have the 2010 date set by today so it could use today's marathon as the kickoff for next year's race.

The mantra should be something along the lines of "we've come to our senses."

Running 26.2 miles is one of the most grueling activities the human body can endure. I know. I ran the Los Angeles Marathon two years ago. I ran it in March, and it seemed awfully hot those last 13 miles.

This year's race is nearly three months after its usual date. Everyone makes mistakes. The city council made a big one here - subjecting runners to the possibility of 90-degree temperatures - but at least LaBonge and others recognize it.

May cooler heads prevail. Move it back.

North Korea confirms underground nuclear test

North Korea state media said the country's military conducted a successful underground nuclear test early Monday, confirming earlier reports of a suspected test based on seismic data.

The news triggered an emergency security meeting among South Korea officials and forced a temporary halt to trading on South Korea's main stock market.

News reports cited North Korea's state-run Korean Central News Agency as saying the nation had "successfully conducted another underground nuclear test on May 25 as part of its measures aimed at strengthening its self-defense nuclear deterrent in every way."

South Korean officials said earlier that it suspected a nuclear test had taken place after detecting an "artificial earthquake."

The U.S. Geological Survey reported an earthquake of magnitude of 4.7 on the Richter scale, centered about 230 miles northeast of Pyongyang. The epicenter is in the same area where North Korea conducted its previous nuclear test in October 2006.

Trading on the South Korean stock market was halted briefly after shares fell sharply in the wake of the news. Stocks recouped some of those earlier losses to trade 0.7% lower by Monday afternoon. Japan's Nikkei index was 1.2% higher at 9,335.18.

The move prompted negative reaction from the diplomatic community, with the United Nations Security Council expected to meet to discuss the event soon.

British junior foreign minister, Bill Rammell, called North Korea's announced nuclear test a "clear breach" of Security Council resolutions and urged it to return to disarmament talks, according to comments quoted by Agence France-Presse.

"We are gravely concerned by North Korea's claims," AFP quoted a U.S. State Department official as saying on condition of anonymity.
Political transition

"These are not ordinary times in North Korea," Uwe Parpart, a chief economist at Cantor Fitzgerald, said in comments Monday afternoon referring to a reported political change in the shadowy Pyongyang regime.

"Any political transition period in an absolute state is fraught with danger," he said. And "dangers in Korea range from military provocation all the way to chaotic Korean unification."

An article late Sunday in the Wall Street Journal said that U.S. President Barack Obama's administration has concluded that North Korean leader Kim John Il has begun a political transition, in which his brother-in-law and third son will be key players. See full WSJ.com story on North Korean transition.

Parpart said "investor caution is most advisable" and "Japan and Taiwan are fine alternatives for investment in North Asia while one waits for the smoke to clear."

North Korea's state media made the announcement around noon local time, or about two hours after South Korean officials detected the unusual seismic activity.

Pyongyang said in late April it would conduct more tests of nuclear devices and missiles.

South Korea's President Lee Myung-bak had called an emergency security meeting to assess the situation, Yonhap reported.

Susan Boyle Memories Youtube Video

Susan Boyle, the frumpy Scottish spinster whose amazing voice has become a global YouTube sensation, stunned audiences again on Sunday as she was voted through to the final of "Britain's Got Talent."

Singing "Memory" from the musical "Cats," the 48-year-old overcame initial nerves to produce another command performance, her soaring rendition winning the telephone vote on the talent show.

"You are one special lady, I have to say, you really are," Simon Cowell, one of the panel of three judges, said after Boyle's performance brought the audience to their feet.

Wearing a shimmering purple dress, Boyle looked far more primped and preened than she did on first appearance on the show last month, when her dowdy looks and quirky manner provoked titters from the audience, who assumed she couldn't sing.

This time, her hair was coiffed, her eyebrows were plucked and she looked almost every inch a star in the making.

"What pressure?" she said when asked afterwards if she was nervous. "It was really good tonight, I really enjoyed it ... I'm very happy to be here and thank you all for your support."

Boyle left the judges openmouthed last month with her rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream" from "Les Miserables," which almost immediately became an Internet sensation, watched more than 60 million times on YouTube.

With appearances since on U.S. chat shows hosted by Oprah Winfrey and Larry King, Boyle -- who has joked that she has never been kissed -- has become a global sensation, her age and appearance conflicting with most images of modern celebrity.

APOLOGY

After her performance on Sunday, Cowell was moved to apologize to Boyle, saying she had been poorly underestimated.

"You know what, I just want to apologize because of the way we treated you before you sang the first time," he said. "You made me and everyone else look very stupid and I'm very happy for you, very proud for you."

Boyle, who sang in choirs as a youngster but always dreamed of a career in London's West End, tried to shut him up, saying she had paid no attention to the global furor.

Since her performance in April, television crews from around the world have camped outside her home in rural Scotland and newspapers have dedicated countless pages to her.

A fan site dedicated to Boyle is titled "Never judge a book by its cover."

In Sunday's semi-final, Boyle defeated seven other acts including a belly dancer and a Darth Vader impersonator to get through to the final on Saturday

Yellow Ribbon Program

The Montana National Guard unveiled a new program Wednesday aimed at helping families cope with military service before, during and after their loved ones are deployed.

The new campaign, entitled the Yellow Ribbon Program, is designed for all branches of the military. The National Guard will host a public meeting Wednesday night in Billings to discuss the new program. The meeting will provide information about support groups, military programs and available services offered to service men and women.

Montana National Guard Senior Sergeant Master John O'Brien says the Billings community plays a vital role in the lives of service members and it's important they get involved.

"We see our members one weekend a month you know, but you see them 28 days a month. So really it's easy to hide something for 2 days but it isn't easy to hide something for 28 days. And we want to know genuinely if our folks are struggling and having problems because we want to steer them in the right direction and help them."

O'Brien encourages all community members to take part in Wednesday nights event. The meeting is open to the public and starts at 7 p.m. at the Armed Forces Reserve Center located at 2915 Gable Road in Billings.

Homage Clothing Apparel, Homage Clothing

Homage jumped off with licensure to market Ohio State Buckeyes gear a couple of years ago. Since, the clothing troupe has far outpaced its quiet Midwestern roots (Ohio to be exact) by offering brand new “aged” t-shirts fresh off the press that reference bygone popular culture mantras, expired ballplayers and fallen politicians.

The brand has blown up with fashion-conscious cats in Japan, but admittedly, U.S. heads have been a little slow to recognize. For now, the company’s tees can only be purchased through their online store.

Hit the “Read More” to peep some of my favorite Homage designs!

Pistol Pete: Press Maravich–”I gave him the fundamentals, but the between-the-legs, behind-the-back, blind stuff Pete does, I never even thought of that.” Don’t forget about the hair, Poppa Press.

Detroit: Straight from the website–“According to a 1984 Time Magazine article, guns came close to ranking as household appliances in Detroit, with an estimated 1.5 million firearms in a city of only 1.2 million people.”

World B. Free: With Free on board with k1x, the World B. movement is in full swing. Chalk up this gold/burgundy affair as another win for the Brownsville native.

Elevator Ernie Johnson: Ernie Johnson coordinates TNT’s award winning “Inside the NBA” with analysts Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley. Johnson’s unlikely ups provide inspiration for this tee. Don’t believe me? Check this. (A portion of this shirt’s proceeds benefits The Lymphoma Research Foundation.)

White Men’s Cant Jump: Rosie Perez, lackluster hoops action, an unbelievable day of “Jeopardy!”, and Rosie Perez.

Moses Malone: A note to religious pundits: Moses was black. Malone delivered an NBA Championship to the City of Brotherly Love under his “Fo’, Fo’, Fo’” manta.

Jesse Jackson, President ‘84: Jesse’s been around for a while now.

Let Them Eat Jellybeans: The backbone to Reagan’s voodoo economics wasn’t his degree from Eureka University or a staunch cabinet of advisers. Rather, it was the glass jar of assorted jellybeans he kept on his desk, encouraging visitors to dip in and enjoy a handful.

Resveratrol Select Review

Looking to learn about Resveratrol?

Today I thought I would write a review on Resveratrol Select.

First, what is Resveratrol, you might ask?

Resveratrol is polyphenol phytoalexin. I know it sounds scary and unintelligible, but actually it’s a natural substance produced by certain vines, pine trees, peanuts, grapes, and other plants.

More about Resveratrol:

Resveratrol is one of the new health supplements for the last few years. They say it could cure diabetes II, extends life and even stops cancer.

Resveratrol is one of the substances that could possibly solve the so called “French paradox”, namely that the French usually eat a diet quite high in saturated fat, yet suffer a low rate of atherosclerotic heart disease, their long life span and young red wines. Resveratrol works as a powerful antioxidant quenching free radical damage in your body. Its unique mechanism of action may prove to have significant life extension properties.

Proven health benefits from taking Resveratrol:

The most important quality with a proven procedure that has Resveratrol is its antioxidant effect. Thanks to it, it stops the action of various free radicals that can damage cells. Resveratrol cooperate with vitamin E and fellow substances.

Prevention of some types of cancer;
Diabetes 2;
Athletic achievements - It is believed that Resveratrol unlocks sports SIRT 1 gene, resulting in significantly improved performance of the test subjects with regard to metabolism speed, hormone levels, etc.;
Extending life span (delaying aging) - It is believed that the way Resveratrol acts is unlocking and encouraging the work of certain genes in human DNA and thus lead to improvement of overall metabolism.

There is research on people receiving up to 5 grams / day without side effects and adverse health effects over a period of several days. Most manufacturers of the additive used for the optimal 500 mg daily dose.

Resveratrol Select:

Resveratrol select is one of the few supplements that is able to promote a health immune system while lowering the harmful cholesterol levels within the body and can boost the function of every cell in the body, creating efficiency within the bodily system and increasing energy levels.

In as little as one tablet per day, Resveratrol select has the ability to change the way that your body functions by increasing the antioxidants within the blood and the cells and creating an efficient working machine, removing the toxins which contribute to disease, aging and even weight gain.

For those seeking a weight loss cure, Resveratrol select can boost the metabolism, meaning that you will have more energy and more drive to exercise. Exercise is an essential part of any weight loss program and should be completed up to four times per week, but many of us are unable to find the time and energy within the daily schedule. Jay Bennett, dead at age 45

Jay Bennett, a rock musician with deep ties to Chicago best known as a former member of Wilco, died early Sunday morning in downstate Urbana, where he had been running a recording studio, according to a spokesman for his family.

The singer and multi-instrumentalist was 45 years old.

"Early this morning, Jay died in his sleep and an autopsy is being performed," said Edward Burch, a friend and musician who collaborated with Bennett on the 2005 album "The Palace at 4 a.m." "The family is in mourning and is unavailable for comment at this time."

Born in the Chicago suburb of Rolling Meadows, Bennett began playing in bands as a teenager. He attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and earned multiple degrees in secondary education, math and political science. In between, he co-founded the Replacements-like power-pop band Titanic Love Affair, which released three albums during the alternative-rock heyday between 1991 and 1996, when it was dropped from its label.

Bennett was working at a VCR repair shop in Champaign when he was tapped to join Wilco as it toured in support of its first album, "A.M." A talented arranger and versatile musician who could play virtually any instrument he picked up, from mandolin to Mellotron, Bennett formed a fruitful partnership with Wilco bandleader Jeff Tweedy. His contributions over a seven-year period were key to the albums that resulted in the band's national breakthrough, including "Being There" (1996), "Summerteeth" (1999) and "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" (2002).

Relations between Bennett and Tweedy, both painstaking perfectionists, soured during the latter recording, as documented in the film "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart," and Bennett left the band. Earlier this month, Bennett filed a lawsuit against Tweedy for breach of contract and unpaid artist's royalties, stemming in part from his role in the film.

In late April, Bennett wrote on his MySpace blog about dealing with intense pain from a hip injury suffered during a dive from the stage while playing with Titanic Love Affair. He was preparing to have surgery, but was concerned about his lack of health insurance. However, he also was looking forward to finishing his fifth solo album, "Kicking at the Perfumed Air," at his studio, Pieholden Suites, named after the song on "Summerteeth" that best encapsulates his talents as an arranger.

"This whole experience [with the hip pain] has really taught me to look both inward and outward for support, and I've learned things about myself that I thought I had completely figured out years ago," Bennett wrote. "Family and friends have helped me to keep faith in a future that will actually be much more carefree than my constricted present state. I encourage you all to tell me stories of recovery, as they really do help... All in all, I'm 'in a really good place' right now; I'm just waiting until I can make it all happen."

Bennett's former bandmates in Wilco are touring in Spain and could not be reached for comment. But Burch said he had spoken to bassist John Stirratt, and the band was "broken up" about the news.

"He was an extremely talented musician and a great person, and I'll miss him terribly," Burch added.
