Who: Honduras vs. El Salvador
What: CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying
When: Wednesday, June 10, 2009 , 9:30 p.m. ET
Where: Estadio Olimpico, San Pedro Sula , Honduras
Coming off of vastly different results Honduras and El Salvador are still sitting neck and neck in the Hexagonal table. The Salvadorians stunned Mexico on Saturday and will be looking to knock off another CONCACAF favorite on Wednesday. But the road has been a rough place for everybody in the group and Honduras has plenty of motivation coming into this one.
In front of a sea of Honduran faithful in Chicago Los Catrachos took an early lead only to see the U.S. claim their first comeback victory in World Cup qualifying since 1985. Despite having a few golden chances to put a second past U.S. ‘keeper Tim Howard, Honduras looked over matched in the second half and eventually surrendered the goal that would cost them two vital points.
But home is where the heart is, and the last time the Hondurans played on their own turf they ran out 3-1 winners over Mexico . Another strong showing at Estadio Olimpico against El Salvador and Honduras will back into one of the top three spots in the Hex.
Their opponents won’t make it easy though. El Salvador ’s only road match of the round was at Ricardo Saprissa stadium, a place that seemingly strikes fear into the hearts of most teams who have to play there. Yet the Cuscatlecos showed their fortitude and walked out of Costa Rica having conceded only one goal to one of the most dynamic attacking sides in the region.
If El Salvador is still riding high after their win over Mexico and can get an unexpected three points on the road the Hex could be turned on its head.
Players To Watch:
El Salvador : Julio Martinez. Scored the first and was a big part of the second in El Salvador's 2-1 win over Mexico.
Honduras: Ramon Nunez. The 23-year-old winger was not at his best against the U.S. but has the ability to supply Honduras ’ big strikers with plenty of service from the wide areas.
